Multiplication Madness

Over the coming weeks in 4M we are learning our multiplication tables. Today the students completed 100 multiplication problems each. They had 15 minutes to answer the questions and then we marked them as a class. After looking at their sheet the students have created some learning goals for their multiplication focused on speed, accuracy and their knowledge of multiplication.

We are going to use a number of different methods to help build our knowledge of the times tables such as: Sumdog, listening to the tables being sung from YouTube, games with dice and dominoes and playing games like around the world to practise.

After learning our tables we are going to complete another sheet with 100 tables in 15 minutes again this time we are going to record the times the students took and their accuracy to see how well they have learnt their tables.

Regrouping in Addition

Over the past week in Maths we have been revisiting the concept of regrouping in addition problems. As a class we have done some learning activities to explore what is really happening in addition problems involving regrouping.

We have represented problems with MAB blocks (ones, tens & hundreds) to see what is  happening when we have to regroup. As a class we solved problems involving regrouping on the whiteboard. Students solved problems involving regrouping independently from the board. In pairs the students made Powerpoints or other presentations to show what they understood about regrouping. The students are going to share their insights about what they have learned about regrouping.
